Too many small business marketing campaigns are designed with the goal of getting all the business they can. That sounds natural, right? Advertising, by definition, is an effort to bring in more customers and more profit. But designing your marketing efforts while only thinking about bringing in more money will ultimately lead you to fail.

Instead, focus on giving when you are trying to sell your product. In fact, if you effectively give away your product or service to enough of the right customers, you will see far more profit than you ever would from an expensive advertising campaign.

Decide What to Give

The first step in designing a giving based marketing strategy is to decide what it is you can give away. The idea here is to entice customers with a taste of your product or service, with the goal of making them want to come back and pay for more.

If you produce a product, the answer to this step is easy: simple give away some of your product. But if you are in a service industry, it is not so cut and dry. You will have to decide how much of your time you can afford to give away without costing you too much. It is a balancing act, and you may have to go through some trial and error to get it right.

Let Your Customers Know About It

Now, even if you are willing to give stuff away, you will not be able to if you don't let people know about it. Sure, you could walk down the street tossing your product out to random people, but that is time consuming and downright stupid. Decide who it is that will most benefit from your giving efforts. This will be people from your target market; the people that you want to come in and buy your stuff.

Once you have determined who you will be giving stuff away to, you will have to tell them about it. Design an attractive " but inexpensive " color printing that describes your product or service, and how much of it you are giving away. Make sure you tell them how they can take part in your free giveaway. Then, distribute this color printing to your target customers, and get ready!

Follow Through

Before you plan your giveaway, you must be absolutely certain that you can deliver what you have promised. Make sure you have the financial flexibility to afford the initial losses that you will incur from giving products away. And be flexible with your customers, too. If someone comes to you looking for some free stuff, but does not quite match the criteria that you set out, consider giving them something anyway. You might just make a new customer.

Change the focus of your marketing strategy from one of trying to get, to one of trying to give. Giving away some of your products or services is a great way to create loyal customers.
